My New Orleans

About

I fall in love with cities the way some women fall in love with men. Although I have called Portland, Oregon home for the past 13 years, New Orleans is my new sweetheart.

This city needs a lot of love right now, but has an a lot to give back too. I’m constantly amazed at its beauty, vibrant culture, wonderful food and warm hospitable people. I’ve come to realize that if the U.S. were a person then New Orleans is the soul of America. There is certainly no other city like it in the world and is a litmus for everything good and bad in our country all thrown into one spicy jambalaya. I believe New Orleans is a city worth saving because if we fail New Orleans, then as Americans we are failing. End of story.

This web page is simply some of my musings about my new, temporarily adopted home.

As for me, well, my name is Lizzy Caston and I’m a writer and hack journalist with a focus on food, arts and culture and urban planning. I write for Portland Monthly Magazine, Edible Portland, Portland Spaces and anything else with Portland in the title, along with a whole slew of websites and national and international trade publications. I also own the imaginatively named communications firm, Lizzy Caston Communications, with a specialty in marketing, interactive and new media. Although I have launched and manage websites and blogs for dozens of clients, for some reason I can’t seem to finish my own damn website: www.lizzycaston.com. Still, if you can get over that minor detail, and if you need communications help you should hire me. I do excellent work, I’m creative and honest and I work really hard. People also say I’m funny and fun to work with.
